Awesome horchata and molasses cookie lattes. Keith designed the two lattes that we ordered today and he also made them. The drinks were sooooo yummy! Keith was also very friendly and talked to us too.

J. R.

A: Wow, thank you for those kind words! Keith is a first-rate barista and we’re so lucky to get to work with him. I’m personally addicted to his ginger-y Chai recipe, which was in such high demand we started carrying the concentrate in reusable glass jars in our Grab ‘n Go section.

Lis Harvey, Marketing Manager

Q: Not really a problem, I just wish the tri-tip wasn't always SMOKED. I like the availability of tri-tip on Saturdays, but it seems that smoked is the preferred method of preparation for the grill master or kitchen staff, and this is a flavor I prefer only occasionally. Please marinade it & grill it in a "less is more" fashion, or at least offer this option. A couple of years ago, we had an older gentleman who simply marinated & grilled the tri-tip near the front entrance patio. It was a beautifully simple marinade with red wine (or red wine vinegar--can't recall), Worcestershire sauce, maybe rosemary & soy sauce. That tri-tip was "perfection" to me.

L. B.

A: Thank you for your feedback on our new BBQ program. With the program being relatively new, we wanted to have a consistent recipe in which we could accurately execute and train every day. This is not to excuse the option of having a just grilled tri-tip. Therefore, the marinated option will considered in the near future, and if you would like the grilled option at anytime, please do not hesitate to let us know 24hrs in advance and we will have it made and set aside for you.

Thank you for your time, and input.

Bryan Hankins, Deli Manager and Chef

Q: Please look into Tendu wine. Both red and whites are affordable, low alcohol wines with lovely flavors. They are sold in 1 liter bottles with crown cap closures. They are made by Steve Matthiason (Napa) from Yolo County grapes!!

A.W.

A: Thanks so much for writing. I'm excited you love Matthiason Family wines. I do too and have carried the Tendu white (on the shelf and in the white wine cooler) for the past two vintages. I just brought in the Tendu 2015 red this past winter and it's located in the Distinctive Reds shelf of the Wine aisle. We'll be hosting a free pouring of these wines soon and I'll make sure to shoot you an email when the date is set. We also carry the Linda Vista Chardonnay by Matthiason, as well.

We're terribly sorry about the missing 8oz cans of club soda and have them on order now. They should be back on the shelf by Saturday, April 8! Thank you for letting us know and shopping at the Co-op!

Julie Loke, Wine Buyer and Center Store Manager

Q: Please 'bag' groceries for customers who have brought their own bags. Not doing so has the potential to DISCOURAGE customers from bringing their own bags. It also begs the question, has their been a policy change relinquishing staff from bagging groceries for customers who bring their own bags?

E.M.

A: Thanks for your suggestion! The way the cashiers are taught is to always ask if the customer would like a bag (if they do not already have one). We then ask them if they would like assistance bagging. A lot of times customers prefer to bag for themselves so we train the cashiers to figure out if they would like help out bagging or not.

Thanks!

Andy Cordova, Front End Manager

Q: We joined today since we were previous whole food shoppers and everyone was absolutely amazing. Even my husband commented how friendly the people were. He hates grocery shopping and I think he will like it a lot better now!!! We had fun tasting the chai you were demo-ing that day and the lady was super sweet. I'm super happy you carry Bread Srsly. Having to eat Gluten Free when your old favorite food was SF Sourdough is sad, and this bread actually tastes like the real thing! I'm also in love with the Siete Tortillas so please keep them.

M.D.

A: We also started carrying the Siete Grain-Free Tortilla chips (top row, Aisle 6), and they might be the best tortilla chips I’ve ever tasted. Thanks for the great recommendation and the kind words. Welcome to the Co-op, and congratulations on becoming an Owner!

Lis Harvey, Marketing Manager

Q: Please fix the pavement at the entry walkway. I was pushing my cart with 3 gallons of water along with many glass items (olive oil, kombucha, etc.) and the cart caught in the pavement, stopped and flipped over, and I almost fell over with it. It was quite scary, because I'm a pianist and make my living as a musician, and could have easily broken my arm. I would like to commend your excellent employees, Laura & Alex, who took care of everything - comforted me, had someone clean up the mess, reimbursed me for the goods I'd purchased, and even helped me back to my car. I love the co-op and will continue to shop here, but really feel that the rough spot in the pavement needs fixing.

M. B.

A: I am so sorry to hear about your accident, however, glad to hear that our staff was able to attend to your needs. I do have great news, our maintenance man Bruce, paved over that one particular spot, and we are currently in the process of having our entire parking lot re-paved. I want to thank you for taking the time to write a suggestion and hope to see you in the store some time soon.

I'talia McCarthy, Operations Manager

Q: It would be nice to have a chair or two tucked away in corners of the aisles for tired shoppers to sit and rest. I'm not as young as I used to be (and have not been well this year) and I just HAD to find a place to rest this afternoon, after being on my feet for half an hour of intense shopping. I found the Board room eventually, and had a nice chat with a staff member.

They don't have to be expensive chairs, people just need an opportunity to get off their feet and rest for a few minutes. We have water fountains for the young, it would be nice to have something for us who are older and creakier ;)

C. L.

A: Thanks for the great suggestion. We'll look into a few discreetly placed benches or chairs.

Lis Harvey, Marketing Manager

Q: Request that we carry Bubbies pickles, especially the Bread & Butter Chips.

D. S.

A: Thank you for your request! We do already carry the Bubbies Whole Dill Pickles, and we now carry their Bread and Butter Chips. Please let me know if there is anything else I can do for you and thank you for supporting the Davis Food Co-op!

Katie Bielski, Center Store Buyer

Q: Can cashiers have a way to input a fractional amount of water into the teller & have it
compute a price?

D. S.

A: There is a way for the cashiers to enter water in different fractions. We have buttons and PLU's for them. We have a 1 gallon button, a half gallon button and a 3/4 button and a less than a 1/2 gallon. They have existed for years, and we even added a section for the High Ph Water. I'll make sure all of the cashiers are aware of their existence.

Briza Ramirez, IT Coordinator

Q: How is the decision made at the Davis Food Coop regarding which magazines to carry and display at the checkout area? The reason I ask is that I know of a magazine that I would like to see at the Davis Coop but do not see it. The name of the magazine is “Naked Food”. Please do not let the title dissuade you to think it is frivolous or some joke because of the word “naked”, but it is a serious magazine devoted to promoting the acceptance and knowledge of the benefits of a whole food plant based diet and lifestyle. Here is a link to the website of this magazine: nakedfoodmagazine.com

I believe it would be totally appropriate for the Davis Coop. So I would like to know if the magazine display decision is under the control of management at the Davis Coop or made by some magazine distributor or perhaps some other method. Thanks for your consideration of my question.

M. A.

A: We have ordered "Naked Food," and it will arrive with our next shipment of magazines. Thanks for the suggestion!

Karla Campos, Wellness Buyer

You're Welcome!

Thanks so much for clearing out the area in front of the deli!

J. Y.

Thanks to Vanessa in Supplements. Coming here is truly a "feel good" experience and it made my day! We (hubby and I) have been co-op members in Humboldt since around 2,000 a.d. Love the co-op, leaders in organic and non-GMO. Thank you! Awesome staff. So friendly and helpful. It's always a joy to come here and an oasis of sanity, kindness and great customer service. Member here since about 2011 or 2012. You have an amazing, knowledgeable and courteous staff. Special thanks to Lynn in Cheese, Tino in Deli, cashiers, Ari in Produce, and vitamin/supplement staff.

N. S.

Love the North Star vegan GF bread!

K. L-M.

Thank you for carrying those reusable BPA-free plastic bags called “Evert Fresh,” in the Produce section. They are wonderful, and can be reused many times more than the 8-10 times listed.

L. K.

Thanks for an incredible store!

S. W.

You all do amazing work everyday! I admire how you try to accommodate all our suggestions -- I wonder if members fully appreciate what a gift & resource the Co-Op is when most of us know in our hearts "you can't please everybody." Despite this common knowledge, you all try, everyday!

L. B.

You have a very polite staff!

C. G.

Dear DFC, Each and every time I enter thru the co-op doors, a feeling of well being washes over me. In the last few years the co-op has faced many challenges. As a customer, some of the changes are unfortunate, but, for the most part, the co-op remains the shining jewel of Davis. One of the main features in particular that makes the co-op the best place on earth is the staff. So many dedicated, hard-working, super helpful, very friendly and caring people in every department. The meat dept. has an incredibly fine staff. The front end is the icing on the cake. Produce - such divine humans. The cheese mavens are the bomb. Grocery & bulk have stellar helpers. I love everyone! Thanks for everything.

S. G.

Thanks for carrying organic chicken liver!

Anonymous

Sam from the meat/seafood counter was very helpful! His dedication really made my day. :-) This is why I shop at the co-op - excellent service and excellent people. I love Davis!

Anonymous

I love the people who work for the co-op - always helpful and fun. Keep it up!

Q: I'd like to praise all the staff! Especially the new chef!! The Coop has made so many improvements and I'm loving it. Are most items on the hot and cold bar organic? I love that the Sacramento Coop is all organic, can we do the same? The staff is awesome. I love the Davis Food Co-op and I've been a member for a very, very long time. :) How about posting what's on the hot food bar for the day or week online? Bread was at an all time low during the holidays...

M. H.

A: Wow, thanks for the super kind words and great suggestions. We love our staff, and are pretty proud of our new Kitchen Manager, Bryan Hankins. Every item on the salad bar (cold) is organic. We have the only 100% Organic Salad Bar in all of Davis! Our hot bar is not all-organic, although many items are. We're great about labeling ingredients, and when quinoa or veggies (et cetera) are organic, we say so on the label above the hot dish. As for posting our offerings online each day (or once a week)—that is a wonderful idea! We are moving in the direction. Meanwhile, we make an effort to post exciting food arrivals on Instagram or Facebook or Twitter. Please follow us on those networks, if you'd like to know when something delicious has just come out of the oven. Regarding the bread during the holidays—eeesh. So sorry about that. We've recently changed the way we manage our bread stock, so next holiday season should be much smoother! Thanks again for taking the time to write to us. You make the Co-op world go 'round!

Lis Harvey, Marketing Manager

Q: Maple Hill Creamery has 100% Grass Fed, artisan-quality yogurts... Delightful in flavor and texture, the perfect morning experience. I am so sad every time I walk by the yogurt section and do not see Maple Hill Creamery Yogurt. The days I want to purchase yogurt I end up shopping at Nugget (the only store in Davis that carries Maple Hill Creamery yogurt). I much prefer Coop over Nugget, and would be so happy if the store could try carrying Maple Hill Creamery for a bit. I know other members and customers would enjoy the product just as much as I do!

M. M. R.

A: Hello! I am working on bringing them in. Thanks for the suggestion!

Michael Van Berg, Chill Department

Q: Just want to thank whoever found my phone in the parking lot today. I was shopping this morning around 10:30 and did not notice that I had dropped my cell phone in the parking lot when I got out of my car. When I returned to my car, someone had left the phone on my hood. Thank you!

P. A. W.

A: We have such an awesome community! Thanks for being a part of it.

Lis Harvey, Marketing Manager

Q: Please look into improving member / guest Wi-Fi... it really barely works on the patio, nor inside the store. This improvement is long overdue. What is going on?

There seems to be an issue with the hot food bar overheating. Since early fall, the morning breakfast has been ruined -- crunchy hash browns and potatoes, really dry French toast and eggs, etc... to top it off, the serving spoon handles were scorching hot and required a wad of napkins to handle. Been loving the fresh-made a.m. foods for years, until recently with this occurring.

I'd like to praise the smart people who solved our cart-dance logjams by moving the milk down further from the bread... THANK YOU!

It was really cool hearing from the two guys from the landscaping team at their Saturday morning workshop this fall. I'm glad the Co-op is a showcase for sustainable landscape design.

As you can see, I have a nice winter break, and found the Co-op's online suggestion box! Lol...

J. B.

A: Thank you for taking time from your vacation to let us know how we’re doing, and where you’d like to see improvements; your feedback is so important. We’re glad you enjoyed Whole System Design’s free patio workshop in September. Sustainability is so beautiful and rewarding, isn’t it? We’re looking forward to this spring, when John & Derek’s hard work will be in full bloom. As for our free wireless, sorry to hear that’s been a frustration. I’m happy to report we’ve been systematically working on a technology overhaul for the past 10 months. Look for improvements this winter—and don’t hesitate to ask our cashiers to reboot the router if the wi-fi isn’t performing. That’s a humble solution that often works. I’m also pleased to report that we’ve replaced those too-hot-to-touch spoons in our hot bar with utensils that have heat-safe handles. We also found that, indeed, we were keeping the hot bar a little too hot. We have adjusted the temperature accordingly. Please visit our hot bar again in the early morning for delicious breakfast options, and keep letting us know what you think!

Lis Harvey, Marketing Manager

Q: Request we carry smaller containers of buttermilk. It’s always more than I need.

R.B.

A: We used to carry a smaller buttermilk. I will look into it and find out why we do not carry it any longer. Thanks for the suggestion.

Michael Van Berg, Chill Department

Q: Suddenly the oil-cured olives have pits—dangerous to bite down on in a salad or sauce. Cheese staff said 2 times that the order was for pitted (NO PITS) but the order came with incorrect product. It should have been rejected.

M.S.

A: I'm very sorry you had a bad experience with the oil cured olives that have pits in them. I emailed our rep about them and we will no longer be getting them, usually he sends us those when they are out of the pitted ones. Also just a friendly reminder there are signs on the olive bar stating that some olives do contain pits as well as on the individual olive signs. I also will request new signs for the olive bar so that it will be clear what olives contains pits. Thank you for telling us so we can continue to better our customer service.

Mayra Garibay, Cheese/Olive Buyer

Q: Request we have special order forms at all registers.

S.H.

A: Currently we have Special Order Forms at each of the drawers at the registers. We also have a stack at the Owner Services kiosk and would be glad to aid in any special ordering that needs to be placed.

Andy Cordova, Front End Manager

Q: I’d like to praise the butcher staff, especially Jim and Sam. They always accommodate my erratic schedule and arrange for me to pick up meats that they gladly custom cut to my specifications. The products are always fresh, tasty, and of exceptional quality. In addition, they are always friendly and remember my name. Best meat counter in Davis!

P.S.

A: Thank you!

Jim Pavlichek, Meat Manager

Q: Your hot food section really sucked...I don't know who was in charge of the food preparation but the burnt Fried chicken i ate was really prepared by someone who hasn't a clue on how to cook chicken!..The crust was a mess thick tasteless dough and it was burnt on top of dried up chicken parts...i was intrigued by the color of it..thinking it was some kind of ethnic recipe...but instead i was surprised by the lack of experience ...you should of hired me to cook! Then there was the suppose Mongolian Beef i was looking forward to eating...it looked intriguing...so i bought about 9 dollars of that and to my surprise it was horrible also...Way over the top on salt!..do these people know how to prepare food at all? It was so salty i was tempted to give the remainder to my dogs also...but think i will try to dilute the salt with adding rice and vegetables with it...and i am on budget and these two items were extremely expensive...I am a member and the food was very ill prepared...There are some hot food items i haven't eaten yet...one that i am waiting on is the garlic mashed potatoes...the taste try will be today..and i will give you my opinion on this....really....was the main chief on vacation on Saturday? Yikes!

M. J.

A: Thank you for taking the time to write to me about your experience with our hot bar. I am so sorry that the dishes were not to your liking. We have been experiencing some staffing issues in the kitchen and unfortunately this slipped through. We have taken steps to ensure that this will not happen again. If you would like to discuss further I may be reached at 530-758-2667 Sunday through Thursday 7am-2pm. Again, I apologize for your less than awesome experience.

Gina Decambra, Assistant Deli Manager

Q: I see you are advertising food delivery - and it seemed like a good time to comment on something I have been thinking about for awhile... you need a new chef in the deli - the deli salads and the soups and hot food leave much to be desired - flavor! freshness, appearance. I love to cook and have a great palate and your kitchen can do better. I'm not trying to be mean I love the co-op and I want to see you shine! I see you trying to copy some of the Nugget salads - that's great - but they need to be excellent not just so so. really I think you can do it! If you want more specific suggestions I would be happy to help.

W. S.

A: Thank you for your thoughtful feedback. I will pass your suggestions on to our Deli Manager. We are not able to offer free delivery of food, however. This time of year, we offer free delivery of Christmas trees on eligible Saturdays. The final one is December 17. Thanks, again, for taking time to write!

Lis Harvey, Marketing Manager

Q: Request that we carry shelf stable organic silken tofu like we used to do.

T. R.

A: Hello! We do currently carry a shelf stable silken Tofu by Mori-Nu and it is non-GMO-certified but not organic. I am not sure why we discontinued the organic silken tofu. However, I will look into it and make sure to get back to you when I find out the answer.

I'talia McCarthy, Center Store Manager

Q: Charge a fair price for all vegan products. More specifically the Gardein vegan frozen products are really really over priced at the Davis Food co-op. The Nugget charges $1.00 less per package as does the Bel Air market and Whole Foods. Grocery Outlet, when they have them charge up to $2.00 less per package. I would think the Food Co-op would be more competitive. You know its a good product because you can’t keep some of them on the shelf. Be more fair in your pricing. Usual excuses don't apply in this case. When you first started carrying the product it was more affordable. I don't want to accuse you of price gouging but.....

D. C.

A: We lowered the price of the Gardein products to $4.99, the suggested retail price. The Co-op is a small business and cannot compete with the buying power of Nugget, Whole Foods and Grocery Outlet. In our competitive, post-Starbucks world, the big box grocery stores would love nothing more than for you to think the Co-op is "price gouging." We are not. We work hard every single day to offer fresh and local and quality products at the best possible price--while still providing our employees with decent pay, excellent benefits and a cohesive work environment. Thank you for your suggestion and thank you for supporting the Co-op!

Katie Bielski, Center Store Buyer & Lis Harvey, Marketing Manager

In Brief:

We will look into bringing back:

  • Community Grains pasta

November/December 2016

Please note: We cannot reply to anonymous comments. Click here to have your say!

Q: Request that we carry red bananas.

-PV

A: Thanks for emailing us at the Co-op with your request! I'm happy to share that we have been carrying red bananas for a short amount of time now and intend to keep doing so. We experience occasional "gapping" with them, meaning that they become unavailable from time to time. When we do have them, they are next to kiwis and mangos on the same table as the large yellow banana display.

-Brad Elliott, Produce Manager

Q: Request that we carry: Baba small batch spicy black bean humus, vegan curry humus. Actually all of the Baba Products are good.

-LB

A: Thank you for your request, however due to limited shelf space we only carry the top/fastest selling items. I would be happy to special order a case of the Baba Hummus for you, there are 6 to a case.

-Katie Bielski, Frozen/Dairy Buyer

Q: Request that we carry Celestial Seasonings Organic Teas

-CM

A: Thanks for your request to carry Celestial Seasonings Organic Teas. I will look into seeing which of our distributors carry this product, and will contact you on if we decide to bring the product in or if its available for special order.

-I’talia McCarthy, Center Store Manager

Q: Request that we carry a decent Halloween candy. In the past 2 years you have carried the small endangered species chocolate bars-trick or treat size, individually wrapped in a larger bag. This year the only candy has 6 small print lines of ingredients many of them have no organic alternative all have gluten. This is no better than Safeway. Thank you. P.S. I don’t think you have sold out of the healthful stuff. I have been looking for 2 weeks now and I have asked.

-MH

A: I am so sorry that you were unhappy with our Halloween candy selection this year. We had many different alternatives of candy that we put out late September and they were the first to go. Unfortunately we must pre-order the candy three months in advance and we tend to order based on what we sold last year. I will make a note to order more for next year. Sorry for any inconvenience.

-I’talia McCarthy, Center Store Manager

Q: We always seem to be out of Acme whole wheat both types. I got the last whole wheat of any kind from Acme Bread Co. at 9:15 am less than one hour after delivery. The rest of the shelf is full of the other kinds of white bread or specialty types. I use whole wheat levan when it is the last whole wheat to go. Someone else also likes it, (as) much as you get 2 per day. The regular whole wheat is always out before 9:00. You need to order maybe one more at least of both whole wheats.

-SM

A: I will make sure to contact ACME and see if we can get some more whole wheat. I know they try and give us exactly what we can sell, in order to cut down in spoilage. Please look for more on the shelf in the near future!

-I’talia McCarthy, Center Store Manager

Q: Request that we carry Kosher Chicken Broth; even Raleys has this. Can you explain why the 1st time in 25 years there is no holiday Challah?

-SS

A: I will make sure to bring in some Kosher Chicken Broth, and to contact you when it arrives and is on the shelf. I know that we had Challah in the bakery department this year, and that it gets ordered on a regular basis. Please feel free to ask any employee to help you find where it’s located, the next time that you are in the store. Thanks for your feedback, we really appreciate it!

-I’talia McCarthy, Center Store Manager

Q: Request that we carry Jarlesberg Lite Cheese.

-SS

A: Thank you for your request for Jarlesberg Lite Cheese. Unfortunately, we used to carry this product and we discontinued it due to low movement and shrinkage. If you would like, we can special order it for you!

-I’talia McCarthy, Center Store Manager

Q: Request that we carry Stouffers, Knudsens. Now you’ve stopped carrying Stouffers brand frozen foods (all kinds), Knudsens cottage cheese, Angelinos Mac n’ Cheese, chipped beef, fettuccini alfredo. Standard operating procedure: 3 rows of product rarely bought, 1 row of product nearly always out. Then the 1 row isn’t restocked for weeks…then it is discontinued. I wish I had a dime for every item I buy that you discontinue.

-FM

A: Thank you for your request. I'm so sorry but we did discontinue that account. There are some Stouffer's and Lean Cuisine products available through another distributor. I can order these through a special order, which means you would have to order a case, which is usually 6 to 12. I can send you a list of the products if you like. Our main issue is shelf space, and we try to bring in as many local and organic products as possible. Please let me know if there is anything else I can do for you!

-Katie Bielski, Frozen/Dairy Buyer

Q: Bee House teapots and cups range from $11.95 to $33.95-a $22 “gap”!! All are up too high to reach to see if price is on bottom…SOLUTION Colored dots to code prices so you actually sell them! The same goes for the Tea Forte cups in boxes on the top shelf.

-MS

A: Thanks for your great suggestion about the Davis Food Co-op teapot location. We will be moving them down for the fall / winter season, even though we have had much success with them above our bulk herbs. It's understandable that there is a price gap confusion where they are located, and will address it soon! Great idea!

-Sonia Chevalier, Wellness Coordinator

Q: Please bring back the Capellino pesto sauce with pine nuts-fresh, not frozen! You used to carry it before you moved the pestps. This is super yummy pesto and I miss it badly!

-CK

A: The Capellino's Pesto is shipped to us frozen. I like to keep that way to prolong the shelf life, and I have limited space in the fresh Pasta set. We do still carry it, it's located in the first frozen door with the pastas. Thank you for your request, and thank you for supporting the Co-op. Let me know if there is anything else I can do for you.

-Katie Bielski, Frozen/Dairy Buyer

Q: Granola bin #7395 lists no added sugar in this, yet sugar is listed in nutrition stats as quite high. Higher than the ones with added sugar.

-D

A: Thank you for your inquiry. The ingredient list includes all products that are added to the finished product. The nutritional facts list all the components of each ingredient. So, even though there is no added sugar in this granola, the ingredients include organic cane juice, organic molasses and organic grape juice. All of these products have naturally occurring sugars as part of their make-up.

I hope this makes the nutritional facts make sense. If you have more questions, please send me an e-mail or phone the store and I will be more than happy to further expand on this confusing issue.

-Becky Santos, Bulk Buyer

Q: I have spoken to the cashiers and their legs hurt from standing. There are excellent foam, high quality pads for standing on long hours. Not that expensive, available from Amazon-very good quality with a guarantee, I believe they are called “Air” something? They are a life-saver! NO-the ones you have now do NOT COUNT. Admin should try standing for 8 hours at the registers. Concrete floors to boot! Yes, I know they get breaks- yada yada…Ones at Ace are way more expensive and poorer quality. I believe the mats are available at Woodland Costco as well.

-K

A: Thank you for taking the time to write and share your concerns for the well-being of our cashiers. We have recently replaced the mats with anti-fatigue kitchen and office comfort standing floor mats from Amazon.

-Bija Young, Operations Manager

Q: Please! Change the kid’s corner. You have it in a small dark place-no paper, no crayons-no fun! Now have to have kids running around store.

-CO

A: Thanks for taking the time to write about the kids corner. We are still trying to figure out the best seating options for that corner but the light issue is being addressed ASAP.

-Bija Young, Operations Manager

Q: Today I was surprised to hear some extreme “techno” music at the Co-op. I’m not complaining so much because of my personal taste, but because that sort of music is just not appropriate in public. A more “neutral” sort of music would be appreciated, regardless of genre.

-R

A: Music is such a subjective thing. We try to please as many as possible but ultimately end up annoying some. Without specific dates & times I cannot investigate. We have recently been having some work done on our speakers and paging system which has led to fluctuations in volume.

-Bija Young, Operations Manager

Q: Are you sure the new butcher wrap paper is not compostable? The new city composting program allows things like waxed milk cartons so I thought it would be fine to toss the wrap in my container. I'm guessing the plastic-y material that goes between the pieces of meat is not...

-J.K.

A: Although our wrapping still involves a plastic sheet that should not be placed into the organics bin, our new, waxed butcher paper (brown kraft, printed with a white “Co+op” logo) is compostable. Further good news: that producer is practicing "source reduction" by making both the paper and plastic components of the wrap thinner. That means the portion you must discard (the plastic liner) is at least less material than it used to be.

Thank you for asking!
-Jim Pavlichek, Meat Manager and Bija Young, Operations Manager

Q: I'm very disappointed in the new supplier of frozen pizza dough. Not only is it an inferior product, it's about half the size and costs more. I used to prefer your pizza dough to Trader Joe's pizza dough, but now I cannot say that.

-J.S.

A: I am sorry to hear you do not like our new pizza dough. We decided to bring the Passione Pizza dough into the Co-op because they are local and offer an organic variety,
sprouted wheat, and they are gluten free. The packaging also works better for us, as the La Monica brand package would tear easily. Please let me know if there is anything else I can do for you! Thank you for supporting the Co-op.

Co-operatively,
Katie Bielski, Frozen Buyer

Q: What if the Co-op went back to the old system of turkey distribution? Found a new source for true heritage turkeys? Notified members of changes in the system? The only "heritage" turkey you have for sale this year is the Diestel hybrid. I did not know of that beforehand, as you discontinued your mailings for ordering turkeys. I think that your following Diestel's labeling of this turkey as "heritage" is very misleading. Had I known that you were selling hybrids, I would have found another source for my turkey. I have been serving true heritage turkey to my family and friends for years, and I am deeply disappointed to have to serve the one I bought tonight. (I only bought it because I thought there was not enough time to find a real heritage turkey.) If you are not going to offer the real thing, at least tell your prospective customers beforehand what you are offering.

I believe you have handled this year's turkey sale very badly. You discontinued the mailer, which might have provided me with the information I needed to find that you are not selling true heritage turkeys. Those of us who have used the system for years were left wondering what was going on. When I was able to ask someone, I found out that the system was "streamlined." Because I wanted to be sure to get a heritage turkey (or so I thought), I went out of my way to get to the store on the first day the turkeys were available. Had I been able to order it, I would have been able to pick it up at my convenience. To top it off, when the cashier tried to ring it up, the bar code did not work. After about a five-minute delay, someone came by to tell the cashier what to do. You have truly dampened my holiday spirit.

-G.M.

A: Oh no! We are so sorry you were disappointed. And thank you for taking time to provide crucial feedback on how we can better serve your holiday needs. We stopped carrying Mary’s Heritage Turkeys a couple years ago, because people weren’t purchasing them. Diestel unveiled their Heirloom line of turkeys at the same time, and those birds are a similar breed (in flavor) to the Narragansett birds raised on Mary’s turkey farms. In the future, you could special-order a Mary’s Heritage Turkey from our Meat Department prior to the holiday. It’d be best to do that early in the fall. Please give either me (ext 152) or Jim Pavlichek, our Meat Manager (ext 138), a call or email to discuss.

Sincerely,

Lis Harvey, Marketing Manager

Q: Some of my friends think Co-op isn’t clean. I think it’s the floor. Will you ever be able to get a new floor?

-RD

A: Thanks for taking the time to write. As of this reply we do not have a plan for redoing our floors. We may be able to get a new floor eventually but it will require careful planning. The disruption caused by re-doing a floor in a grocery store is quite substantial.

Bija Young, Facilities Manager

Q: Request that we carry: Self-Checkout

-A

A: Hi, at this time we do not have a plan for self-checkout. We are in the process of revamping our front end to speed check out times and provide the personal connection that comes with being a community owned cooperative.

Bija Young, Facilities Manager

Q: A project to propose: Planting some ground cover to go below the trees and bushes. I would recommend wild strawberry, creeping thyme, purslane, and irises. Get the bike repair station in better condition or have a shed with some public access to decent tools, make them available by donation.

-D

A: Hi, Thanks for the suggestion. We do have a plan to complete the garden make-over in the coming year.

Bija Young, Facilities Manager

Q: It was cheaper to buy a new bottle of Doc, Bronner’s than it was to bulk. That’s crazy.

-C

A: Sometimes the manufacturer gives a deal, and we purchase and pass the sale on to our customers. This can definitely happen in the case of bulk vs. prepackaged. Our 16 oz Dr. Bronner's Castile Soaps were a great buy, and those who don't purchase bulk items can take advantage of such a great sale. The 32 oz sizes end up on sale too! Thanks for shopping the Co-op!

Sonjia Chevalier, Wellness Coordinator

Q:Request that we carry Koshihikari California Rice for sushi

-JS

A:We can get this from North American. The new crop for this will be in towards the end of October, first part of November. We will be bringing it in at that time.

Becky Santos, Bulk Buyer

Q: Request that we carry: Samosa Pad, Hemp Fu.

-PV

A: Regarding your request for Hemp Fu and Samosa pads, our distributor has a manufacturer outage for the Hemp Fu. I have not been able to find any type of Samosa Pad/ Wraps, if you know of a brand name, that would be helpful. I will order the Hemp Fu when it comes back in stock, sometimes manufacturer outages last for months, I can notify you when it arrives if you like. Thank you for your request and let me know if there is anything else I can help you with.

Katie Bielski, Frozen Buyer

Q: Request that we carry Land O’ Lakes Whipped Butter. You had it until a week or two ago- now it’s gone. I want it. Please bring it back!!

-MG

A: Regarding your request for Land O Lakes Whipped Butter, unfortunately that product was discontinued, I am currently searching for a replacement, it would be Whipped Butter by Challenge, this item should be here this week. Thank you for your request, and let me know if there is anything else I can help you with.

Katie Bielski, Frozen Buyer

Q:Request that we carry loose leaf tea-black coconut. This is the 2nd request.

-KT

A: I checked with my current vendors catalogs and did not see if offered in the catalogs that I have. I am going to check to see if the vendors have this product in a more current catalog. I will continue looking.

Becky Santos, Bulk Buyer

Q:

Request that we carry: 100% grass fed beef; more cuts than just ground. I am doing all of my regular shopping elsewhere due to the lack of grass fed beef.

-LF

A:

Thanks for your interest, as it matches ours as well. We are searing for a source that we can sell at viable prices. Whether organic, or all natural, we’d like to offer 100% grass fed as soon as we can. We’ll keep searching until we succeed.

Jim Pavlichek, Meat Department Manager

Q:

Thanks! Everyone in meat department especially! Would compostable meat wrapping paper be possible? Non Styrofoam packaging? That would be so awesome!

-E

A:

We would love that too! We already divert most of our waste that our department produces, and we’d love for that to extend to our owners and customers when they get their products home. We’ll keep our eyes peeled for a source. For now, you may have noticed the new CO+OP paper we’re using. While it’s not compostable, it does use much less material than the paper we previously used, so we’re part-way there.

Jim Pavlichek, Meat Department Manager

In Brief:

We do carry:

• Wraps/Tortillas 12”+ (on aisle 8 by Indialife)

September 2016

Q: As a daily salad builder for the past 20 months, I'd like to praise the salad bar for being consistently excellent and now 100% organic. See below for some suggestions. The move to a 100% organic salad bar along with a higher price per pound should not eliminate some of the food options that make me (at least) look forward to a salad: (A) Organic blue cheese crumbles - these were in the salad bar but have disappeared; (B) organic walnut pieces - sold in bulk by the Coop but so far not in the salad bar; (C) organic bacon bits - Applegate Organics uncured Sunday Bacon, for example. Also, please refresh the organic chopped eggs more regularly - they descend into zombie territory after a few days of being trotted back out to the bar. This man cannot live on chia seeds alone!

PN

A: Thank you so much for the salad bar praise. We have been diligently working to provide some new and exciting items. We are working to have bacon and Mary's organic chicken on an everyday basis but have had recent issues with the bacon supply. Please let me know of any suggestions you may have or would like to see implemented.

David Hernandez, Deli Manager

Bear with us! A visit to our salad bar today (9/7/16) for my own delicious lunch revealed perfectly-cooked hard-boiled eggs and blue-cheese crumbles to round out my organic plate of chia seeds, croutons, carrot, arugula and caesar dressing. Thanks for your help and guidance, and we promise we'll keep working out the kinks!

Lis Harvey, Marketing Manager

Q: I'd like to praise the friendliness and helpfulness of all workers at the Davis Food Co-op on a very consistent basis. Please sell eucalyptus oil and eucalyptus leaves & eucalyptus nuts. Or, please just bring some eucalyptus nuts and give them away please.

KJ

A: Thank you for your praise, as all of us here at the Davis Food Co-op strive to give excellent service! Currently, we do carry eucalyptus oil in the Wellness Department. There are a few brands to choose from. Please feel free to give us a call, if you have questions about the products and pricing. Unfortunately, we do not have access to the other products. Hope this helps, and to see you here soon!

Q: I've followed, purchased and enjoyed the prepared tri-tip from the Co-Op for the past few years, first on Saturday and now on Thursday. It WAS simply, the best in town and the best in the county (yes, better than the burnt beef from Buckhorn). I bragged to friends that they had to try the tri-tip from the Co-Op. Sorry to say, those days are over. The fellow that used to meticulously marinate and then grill the tri-tip shared with me the "recipe," or at least the ingredients used in the marinade. Fortunately I saved a package label from the time he was preparing the meat so I have the ingredient list. The tri-tip being sold now is not good, it isn't even ok. The seasonings are sub par & the cooking method (oven-baked?) If you can re-create the recipe that was formerly used when the tri-tip was sold on Saturdays, I'll start buying it again. If not, I won't buy it and I'll advise friends to avoid it.

LB

A: I thank you so much for your feedback on the tri-tip. During the summer we have had many spare the air days and have been forced to cook our tri-tip in the oven during these times. We pride ourselves on our bbq and wonderfully smoked meats. We will actually be having the barbecue today if you would like to come in and test it out. Please feel free to give me a call or email anytime with your suggestions.

Thanks so much,

David Hernandez, Deli Manager

The produce dept. seems to have come to life in the last 3 or 4 months - love the variety- presentation - just seems better - keep up the good work.

Q: Thanks for all of the plant-based/vegan items you carry. If you advertised some of them (free), more would get purchased and you would be able to continue carrying them. People on these pages are very interested and we post photos of items and sales we see to one another. https://www.facebook.com/VegansOfDavis and https://www.facebook.com/COOLCuisineDavis Both have chat groups that are active. Thanks.

AM

A: Thank you for taking the time to appreciate our options! It’s heartening to receive such kind words. While we usually channel our social media efforts through our own Facebook page (http://facebook.com/davisfoodcoop), our Club Vegan page, our Teaching Kitchen page, or our Twitter and Instagram profiles, it’s always awesome to be invited to another table. I will look into options on those pages you mentioned!

Lis Harvey, Marketing Manager

Q: No flaws! You guys are awesome!!

M

A: Thank you so much for your comment. We love that you love our Coop and value your patronage. If you haven’t tried it yet, come check out our 100% Organic salad bar.

Prasanna Regmi, General Manager

Q: I appreciate the recycling bins outside. Is there a chance we could add composting? A bin for compostables? Many of us live in apartment building and could bring items over (within reason) and compost Co-op food containers.

MM

A: We are currently working towards offering compost collection on the patio. We are sourcing suitable receptacles, large, commercial size can liners, and increasing our pick-ups with DWR. We will however discourage folks from bringing their compostables from home. The city offers organics collection to all residents, including apartments.

Bija Young, Facilities Manager

Q: Landscaping and tables out front-GREAT!

JL

A: Thanks for the feedback! Whole Systems Designs did a great job.

Bija Young, Facilities Manager

Q: New construction up front/near cashiers. Wrong color! The dark brown sucks the light/energy from the front of the Co-op.

LA

A: Thanks for taking the time to write. The brown is one of four colors in our Davis Food Co-op brand pallet (visible in the Buyer's Office, down the hall on the right past Mermaid Sushi) and was the one that most closely matched current wall colors. As we make updates and adjustments in the store we will be using our brand pallet so things will start to match better. We will eventually have some colorful signs on that wall that will add more flare to that corner.

Bija Young, Facilities Manager

Q: Request that we install a self-checkout booth.

D

A: Thanks for the suggestion. We do not have the space to implement a self-checkout booth at this time.

Bija Young, Facilities Manager

Q: We love the coloring area and child-size carts!

M

A: Excellent! We love our littlest shoppers.

Bija Young, Facilities Manager

Q: New check stand lights = cool! But bulbs are really bright

J

A: Thanks for the comment. We need those bright lights to let all our shoppers know when a lane is open.

Bija Young, Facilities Manager

Q: There needs to be shade for the peeps in the square. Come on! Be human!

C

A: All folks who use the Free Speech Area are told prior to arriving on-site that they will need to provide their own shade.

Bija Young, Facilities Manager

Q: Request that we carry Cork it again wine. Love you guys.

SM

A: We're so happy that the Davis wine scene is expanding and diversifying. Between Cork it Again, Putah Creek Winery's tasting room, Vini and the Co-op's wine tasting events there's always a great place to sip wonderful vino! Unfortunately, we just don't have space on our shelves for everyone. With Cork it Again just down G St. and with an awesome refill your bottle offer ($1 off) we thought it would be pretty easy for folks to purchase straight from their retail store. Check out their website for hours and events, they have Sip and Paint classes that are super fun! http://www.corkitagain.com/

Cheers!

Julie Loke, Wine Buyer/Asst. Grocery Manager

Q: We always seem to be out of Obi (soft drink). I have not seen Obi in the soft drink section in a couple of months-can I order it?

D

A: We have not discontinued Obi, it just has moved to a different spot. it is now located on aisle 8. Sorry for any confusion and thank you for shopping at the Co-op.

I’talia McCarthy, Interim Chill Manager

Q: The chocolate Ibarra I bought last week looked and tasted heat-damaged. I think it might need to be stored in an area away from the light. It was in the sunny coffee porch. Maybe it had melted there or on the delivery truck. I’ll eat it anyway but it’s much better when fresh.

CO

A: So sorry to hear that. We are looking in to moving the drinking chocolate in to the baking aisle. Stay tuned. Thanks.

Rose McFadden, Grocery Manager

Q: Just saw the finished remodels for the first time. Walked in the far door and said to myself what has happened? Why is the co-op so dark? And small? Before I realized why. I think the dark brown finish to the remodel is very wrong. It cuts off light from the registers. Paint color should be pale to reflect light and make the area seem bigger not cramped. There are plenty of light yellow walls in the store already. This area should match the already painted yellow areas.

JH

A: Thanks for taking the time to write. Color is one of the more subjective things around. While some love it, some hate it and not everyone sees it in exactly the same way. We recognize we can not please all the people all the time but we do attempt to please most of the people most of the time. The brown wall is a work in progress. Marketing will be adding some bright and colorful signage to the wall and we will be reorganizing to add more seating in the very near future. The reason I selected the brown rather than one of the other wall colors on the sales floor is that we are moving towards our branded color palette, which can be seen in our main buyer's office in the back of the store. Out of the four colors in the pallet the brown was the one that matched the existing walls the best and would not show the dirt and scuffs from carts and customers in short order.

Bija Young, Facilities Manager

Q: Why do you charge sales tax on Kombucha and Sacramento Co-op does not?

A: California tax on Kombucha is based on the alcohol content of each drink. If the alcohol is less than 0.5%, no sales tax. More than that, there is tax. Don’t know what Sac Nat is doing, but ours are taxed (or not) according to the law.

Steve Kobs, HR

Q: Why did you make prime retail space into an office (formerly register 9/10)? Plus, the paint there is way too dark.

A: That area was not prime retail space. To be a ‘hot spot’ there needs to be shopper traffic going by. Not the case there. The renovation to use the space for checkout lanes was admirable, but returning the space to an office (which it was originally) was the best use of the space.

Steve Kobs, HR

Q: I came to buy supplies for salsa but no red/yellow/orange bell peppers, no Anaheim peppers and no one in produce easily available to ask. Yes I could have gone to deli and had them page someone, but would I have gotten my supplies?

DW

A: The reason we are presently out of stock on these (and several other varieties of) peppers is simply a matter of availability. To put it frankly they are currently unobtainable through any of my suppliers. Which, as inconvenient as it is, makes sense as Anaheims are not in peak season until late in the Summer. This puts us in a situation known as "gapping" in which we are between sources of a given product, ie. the Mexico and Central America crops have reached their end but the California and other US crops have yet to be ready to harvest. I am sorry we did not have what you needed today, and I hope this helps clear up exactly why that was. I hope to see you in the department again soon.

Brad Elliott, Produce Manager

Q: Truly it seems that there is a game of obstinacy in the stocking of products. A popular item sells out over and over again. When it appears on the shelves it is quickly sold out…yet it does not re-appear until the next scheduled time…and it appears in the same quantity. No more is ordered, and no more often. Excuses abound but the result is the same. Two different cookie brands, once in dairy, Hot foods bar (supposedly improved) only sells dried-out suechun chicken and less often. Now Knudsen cottage cheese rarely appears in its accustomed place. Again and again this syndrome repeats. For overpriced groceries that you cannot count on, I am disappointed every time I come here, and am questioning why I return. I guess it’s because of some of the nice people here, except then what was done to Fran was abdominal. If I didn’t live a block away, I’d have left you sooner. Another item request you can ignore…Pet food, Fancy Feast shredded beef with
