October’s Feedback Responses

Department Request/Comment Response from the Co-op
Grocery

Request that we carry:

Organic Miso Soup or similar packets

Email Response:

“Hello, Thank you for your suggestion! We currently carry an organic miso soup pack “Edward & Sons Miso-Cup Traditional with Tofu” , I have attached a photo. This brand makes a few varieties but this one pictured is certified organic. Were you looking for already made Miso Soup? There are some that come in frozen that I could bring into the store. As far as certified organic shelf stable miso the options are limited. We also carry Ocean’s Halo Miso Broth that is on aisle 5, it is organic. Thank you and let me know if you have any questions.”

Produce

Comment:

I made a trip to the Coop on Sunday night, October 1, to buy oranges. There were no oranges to buy and I even asked a staff person to check. He said the Coop was out of oranges. This is a big disappointment that the Coop didn’t have this basic food item. I don’t understand the buying practice. This needs attention. I ended up going to another store to buy the oranges, and this was very frustrating. It makes me rethink using the Coop as my main store if I can’t rely on it for something so basic as oranges.

Response:

Sorry about your misfortunate experience at the Coop. Valencia Oranges are limited since they are a summer variety. So we had a little bit of gapping which means they were not available from the vendor that delivers on Sunday. It can be hit and miss with seasonal items. They picked back up again this week and we have a good supply as of now that I will hope to carry us through October when Navels from California will begin. Thank You

Request that we carry:

Would love to see Talenti Dairy Free sorbetto in Cold Brew coffee and/or Blueberry Crumble – such a great texture for dairy free! I’m sure the freezers have limited space though, so I understand if it’s not possible.

Email Response:

Hi, this is Forrest from the Davis Food Co-op. Thank you for your suggestions! I looked into it and I am going to bring in the Dairy Free Cold Brew Talenti, I didn’t see the Blueberry Crumble flavor in our distributor’s catalog but I will keep looking. The Cold Brew should be on the shelf by next week. Thank you again for your suggestion!

Comment:

The gift card rack grosses me out. They’re not food or cool, cute gift cards. Get rid of it.

Response:

The General Manager, Laura, called them and discussed the thought process behind trying the giftcard rack. In short, there have been shoppers who ask if we sell 3rd party giftcards and with holiday season coming up we thought we would try bringing them in to see if they would work. We did discuss that perhaps the cards could be remerchandised to give more space to Ace (co-op), giftcards that give a % to charity (Habitat for Humanity), etc. They shared that they too buy giftcards but will go typically go elsewhere for them. Laura shared that now they can buy them at the Co-op and keep the money in our store and support the Co-op by purchasing them here instead of Target (where they normally go).

Comment:

Please let me know if you resume substituting avocado for meat. Otherwise I hope to never buy a $10.99 sandwich again.

Email Response:

“Hi, My name is James, I am the Fresh Operations Manager here at the Davis Food Co-op. It looks like you submitted a Feedback/Suggestion comment regarding our Deli Department. Thank you for your feedback. From my understanding, it sounds like you would like to or have been substituting meat in a sandwich with avocado. Upon further investigation, it seems like there was some miscommunication on our end regarding allowing this specific request. I want to let you know that we do allow this request and I will make sure that there is no confusion regarding your request moving forward. I want to apologize for any inconvenience this may have caused you. Please feel free to let me know if you have any other questions or concerns. Thanks for your understanding and we hope to see you soon!”

What if the Co-op did this:

I wonder if there could be an increase in Flying Embers Strawberry guava canned beverages? Many other beverages seem to sell slower while this product is routinely out.

Response:

Flying embers is a really good seller for us. We have been bumping up our orders on both flavors because they do sell so well but unfortunately they are always out of stock. We’ve been trying to order more than we sell just so we always have it on hand but it’s been hard to get. We will continue to keep trying. This is definitely a product we want to keep and are trying to order heavier no.

Comment:

Regarding your changes in policy regarding discounts: the co-op is now more of asocial services agency than a grocery. Your cited data supports the change because we are a college community and students’ income skews the tallies. I refuse to believe that 40+% of students are hungry. It’s easy to mis-check a response to a survey. Seniors would appreciate a re-consideration of your new policy; we are not wealthy and undeserving, no matter our fixed income.

Email Response:

Thank you for reaching out and expressing your concern about our Community Discount Program, I am sorry to hear that you disagree with the decision to implement these changes. The data that we used comes from the US Census Bureau Survey (which does not include the 9,000+ students that live on campus) and a study conducted by UC Davis – one of the most credible research institutions in the United States. The change in no way insinuates that all Seniors are wealthy and undeserving, rather, it attempts to offer everyone who we consider to be needs based in Davis an opportunity to receive an even greater discount than the Senior Discount provided, regardless of age. In fact, nearly a third of all new recipients of the Community Discount are former Senior Discount receivers and many Seniors have been surprised to find that they qualify for the program when they take a closer look at our other qualifications. We understand that this was a big change and neither the Operations team or Board of Directors take it lightly. I would be happy to answer any additional questions about the program that you may have. As a reminder, should you want to direct any comments directly to the Board of Directors, you may also do so by emailing [email protected].

Deli

There was a problem with staff or service:

I was just charged $1 for a coffee refill when I told her I was always charged 95 cents for that. She said that was for seniors. I said I just gave my member # but I’ve been a senior for a long time.

Email Response:

Thank you for reaching out to us with your suggestion box comment regarding the price of your coffee refill. It seems like the issue of your coffee refill now costing $1 rather than 95 cents is because you are no longer receiving the 5% senior discount that made for that 5 cent difference in the past. As you may have heard, as of 10/1, we transitioned away from the Senior Discount in favor of a new 10% Community Discount that helps needs based Members, regardless of age. This program is one that Members must apply for if they meet any of the listed qualifications which can be found on our website here: https://davisfood.coop/communitydiscount/ Feel free to let me know if you have any other questions or concerns.

What if the Co-op did this:
Please have a separate organic wine section. It’s very difficult to find them just looking through the whole display. The Co-op use to do this.

Email Response:

We appreciate your feedback and thank you for giving us your perspective on recent changes in our wine department. After talking it over with the team and evaluating our space, we have decided that we will reserve a full endcap in the department for Organic and Biodynamic wines moving forward. In order to make way for this space, we will need to move through some inventory we currently have on hand which we anticipate will take between 1-2 months. With that said, our goal is to have the endcap transitioned to this new Organic section by the time the new year rolls around. In the meantime, if you are ever in the store Sunday thru Saturday 7am-7pm we would be happy to personally show you where the products that will be making their way to this space are at for the time being.
Thank you once again for your feedback and please feel free to let us know if you have any questions.

Request that we carry:

Full Belly Dried Chiles

Email Response:

“Hi Steve,Thank you for your product request. Full Belly Farms sends us their availability list weekly and for the past few weeks the Dried Peppers were not available. Wellness

Request that we carry:

Conscious Step Giraffes Socks That Protect-please order the Conscious Step Giraffe Socks. I could order them directly from, but id rather that the Co-op have part of the money.

Response:

“We recently placed our conscious step fall order and are waiting for this order to come in. Unfortunately we won’t have the giraffe socks in this order, but they will be back. If the customer doesn’t want to wait we could always try reaching out to the rep and see if we can special order those specific ones before placing our next order. We like to support their new organizations they are working with. For example, some of the new socks coming in are “protect the wolves” “protect the bison” “protect the fox” and many more.”
