Comment:

Please stop selling sage bundles, Indigenous efforts report there are issues with over-harvesting. CNPS & Tongva both have resources on their website. Consider selling white sage seeds & plants instead? Thank you for considering the request.

Email Response:

Thank you for taking the time to share your concerns about the sale of white sage at the Davis Food Co-op. We appreciate and value the feedback from our community, especially on such important environmental and ethical matters. We understand the serious issues surrounding the overharvesting of wild white sage and the impact it has on its sustainability and potential for extinction. We share your concerns and have taken steps to ensure that the white sage products we offer are sourced responsibly. The two brands of white sage we carry, Juniper Ridge and Earth Elements, both source their white sage from private lands in Mexico, where it is cultivated using ethical and sustainable farming practices. These practices are designed to protect the natural populations of white sage and ensure that their harvesting does not contribute to environmental degradation or the depletion of wild plants. In addition to providing ethically sourced white sage, we have also offered white sage seeds and starters in our Produce/Floral Department. This enables our customers to grow their own sage, further promoting sustainability. We plan to continue offering these seeds and starters whenever they are available. At the Davis Food Co-op, we are committed to making responsible choices and supporting sustainable practices. We are always open to suggestions from our members and customers to help us improve and align our practices with our community’s values. Thank you again for reaching out with your concerns. If you have any more questions or suggestions, please do not hesitate to contact us.

Produce

Comment:

Is there a reason the produce area has less ‘compostable’ bags than before? Thanks.

Email Response:

Thanks for reaching out and for your concern regarding our compostable bags. We definitely have been using and always prefer using compostable bags in our produce department over plastic bags. Unfortunately, for reasons beyond our control, our distributor has been having a hard time getting them from their vendor lately. I have been told that they should be getting them back soon and we’ll be able to bring them back and replace the plastic bags that we currently have in place. We understand the importance of compostable packaging and the inconvenience this may cause our customers, but are hopeful that they will be back real soon. Although not ideal for wet produce, we do offer small paper bags as an option. Thanks again for reaching out to us. If you have any other questions, concerns, or feedback, please feel free to reach out. Thanks for your understanding and I hope you have a great week!
