Pigs in a Quilt

Difficulty:

Like pigs in a blanket, but easier and cuter!

Preheat oven to 375F. Dust work station with flour. Gently spread crescent dough to a rectangle pinching the seams together. Roll out to 10″ x 8″. Slice dough lengthwise into 8 strips 1-inch wide. Transfer 7 strips to a parchment-lined baking sheet. Fold back every other strip so parchment is exposed. Starting from left side of sheet, place a hot dog over strips. Bring folded strips back over hot dog. Fold back alternate strips to expose parchment, then place another hot dog next to the first. Repeat folding process with remaining hot dogs. Cut remaining strip in half crosswise. Wrap each half to the left and right edges of woven hot dogs, pinching dough together.
To make it a patriotic quilt, melt 1 Tbsp butter in a small dish. Add red food coloring. Repeat for blue. Use a clean paint brush (better make it a new one) to brush on color in. The whiter the butter, the better. Very yellow butter changes the dye like very yellow egg yolks do. Alternately, skip color and brush dough with egg wash. Sprinkle with sea salt. Bake pigs in a quilt until golden brown, 18 to 20 minutes. Let cool slightly. Cut into bite-size pieces and transfer to a platter with toothpicks for serving if you desire.
